Behind The Lens

Location

I was on holiday in Swanage Dorset in summer 2019 and decided to visit a "Victorian" build Pier which is being maintained and managed by the local charity Swanage Pier Trust.

Time

In my photography this particular day, I was trying to encapsulate what Swanage is about and as you can see the piers leads out to a view of Harry's rock a site of geographical prominence and which generate a lot of tourism. This along with the water-sports and cruising boasts showcase a beautiful place at its prime around 1pm during the summer holiday season.

Lighting

I was looking for a bright sunny day and was successful, as I was originally was thinking bright & vibrant but as I viewed the shot and noticed the contrast of white clouds and dark lamp posts which served to emphasise the view into the white cliffs

Equipment

Shot with Sony RX10 MKIV and nothing else

Inspiration

Just loved the view, which moved from Pier to Yacht to Cliffs & Harry rocks all contrasting to make this cool b/w capture

Editing

Just a conversion colour to B/W in lightroom along with a little sharpening to hone the edges.

In my camera bag

Just my camera which is very versatile along with cokin filters, my iPhone 11 Pro and water.

Feedback

I would suggest ensuring that you have a good spot mapped out and then consider timing as many people visit these types of sites. Brighton, Portsmouth and the south coast towns have great piers to utilise for this type of shot.
