Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a cafe near my home. My husband is so used to me taking photos of him so anytime I find a place with great lighting, I ask him to pose.

Time

If I remember correctly, this photo was taken in October in the early afteroon. There wasn't a lot of sunlight because it was an overcast day, but luckily I was able to get enough light in through the large windows. I've been told it's best not to mix natural light with artificial light because it's hard to edit, but I think having the golden colors from the cafe lights mixed with the cooler colors from the natural light actually give a nice effect.

Lighting

If I'm being honest, I didn't have any special setup or plan with this photo. It was probably my second time visiting this cafe and I happened to have my camera with me. This particular cafe has great windows with a lot of natural light pouring in. Any time I visit, whether it be morning, afternoon, or night, it has great lighting for photos. So when I was sitting there, I noticed that the lighting looked really warm and cozy so I tried to capture that feeling.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Canon Rebel t2i and my 50mm 1.8 lens.

Inspiration

I love cafes and I love my husband haha. I think the reason I really wanted to take it was because of the feeling I got when I was looking at the scene. I felt really good at the time because Autumn is a great season. It was a little cool outside and we were inside next to the fireplace. It was a very hygge feeling.

Editing

I always do post processing. I find that it's almost impossible to take a photo that expresses a feeling without adding any sort of editing. When you're sitting there, you feel emotions and get all the senses that come with being there, but a simple photo can't capture that, so you almost always have to edit it. I prefer cooler tones, but I also wanted to keep the warmth in the photo. Having the cafe lights helped with that. I also deepened the contrast to give the photo more depth.

In my camera bag

I don't usually carry around a camera bag with a ton of stuff in it. Honestly, I just carry my camera itself and my 50mm lens. If I am going for a particular shoot, then I will bring a wider lens just in case and maybe throw in my speedlite, but for the most part, I am really simple when it comes to photography. I like keeping things light and easy to carry so that I'm ready to take a photo quickly.

Feedback

I've taken a lot of photos of different kinds, but the photos I like the most (of mine and others) are the ones that give me a strong feeling. The photos that make me feel warm or cold or sad or nostalgic or any other emotion are the ones that I enjoy the most. The easy thing is that you can capture those moments because you're usually feeling that emotion at the time. The hard part is making sure the people viewing the photo feel the emotion you were going for. What I like to do is work a lot with post-processing. I mess around with Photoshop a lot and usually that's where I feel like I can get the most emotion from a photo. And have fun with it! Sometimes I take a photo aiming to feel happy, but I find when I am editing that it looks better being a more melancholy photo.
