Location
I took this picture at the Kyiv Zoo, which provides some great opportunities for me as a photography beginner. The Kyiv Zoo is currently undergoing some major construction and improvements, which will greatly benefit the animals living there. I really like it because it is not as crowded as other big-city-zoos around the world, especially during the week, and I can spend my entire day to play and try things out.Time
I think this was one of the most magical moments this winter. It had snowed all night and it was a cold morning. When I got to the zoo at 09:00 I was the first and only guest and on my way to the enclosure I was making my own track in the around 30cm of new snow, which had not been cleared yet. The only other person I saw that morning was one of the cleaning staff well away and I sat in front of this beautiful creature alone with my camera for the next two hours, having enough time to communicate and exchange regular glances.Lighting
The snow provided ample light and reflections, despite the cloud coverage and morning hours.Equipment
I used my Canon Eos 6D, handheld, with a Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM lens and no other equipment.Inspiration
I have been going to the zoo regularly to try to get a feeling for the quiet times and be able to find those moments when you can be alone with the animals. I wanted to find an angle and take a shot that is as natural as possible and could also have been taken in nature. The wolf is my favorite and most loved creature and has been since childhood. In these times, Wolves are being reintroduced and are moving themselves back into the European countryside, with much love and hate from the population. I wanted to portray the wolf as a natural member of our society of species and show the grace he embodies.Editing
I did not do any intense post-processing, since I had taken the picture as a .jpeg and I only recently started using RAW. I adjusted the lighting and color intensity and used the haze removal tool.In my camera bag
I carry my Canon Eos 6D, depending on what I want to work on one or several of my favorite lenses (Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM, Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM Macro), a Canon Extender EF 1.4X, my tripod, my cleaning equipment, two spare batteries and two spare cards. I also have a small pillow (bean-bag), a water-proof mat to lay on, two small camo nets and my rain gear. I also always carry water and food, especially if I find something unexpected on my hikes and I want to stay longer as planned.Feedback
Regular visits helped me to understand the movements and habits of the wolf, since wolves are always on the move, even in their zoo enclosures. If they are a little bigger you can usually see the tracks they make over time and adjust your positions accordingly. Without the distractions of other guests (especially during the week, just after opening and just before closing hours) you have a much higher chance of intimate moments and shots with your subject and I usually try to catch those moments.
