Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot out on Ontario Lake in upstate New York at one of my secret places while all the fires were raging out west creating that ominous dark haze in the sky. It is the first of a series that I shot this year: “Hidden Shores of Lake Ontario.”

Time

As with most of my favorite shots, this was taken one early morning at sunrise. I love these days because there is something magical about being the only person out and awake at 4 am (when I leave to go setup for sunrise shots).

Lighting

I knew I was going to get an amazing shot while at sunset the night before, when witnessing the amount of extra smoke and particulate in the atmosphere from the wildfires coming over the horizon. The extra dark diffusion in the air makes for sunsets that are once in a lifetime.

Equipment

For their shot I used my Canon 6D with my Canon 24-70mm L-Series lens at 24 mm on my 3Pod video tripod.

Inspiration

The inspiration for this shot came from both the building desire to shoot my series “Hidden shores of Lake Ontario” and the sunset the night prior as I watched the light bounce and refract as never before off of the smoke particles in the sky.

Editing

Whenever I’m shooting for my professional landscapes, I shoot in a flat format which requires post production to reintroduce contrast and colorize properly, but allows the image to capture a greater level of light depth and detail giving it more of an HDR feel while being just one shot. All my photographic post production is done in Lightroom CC.

In my camera bag

I pack a ton of gear with me when I go out shooting, especially if I don’t have a precise plan or location for my shot. I have my 7D with an 18 - 200 mm zoom mounted for subject/object shots, my 6D with the 24 - 70 mm l-series for wide shots/ landscapes, my gorilla pod tripod, 3pod video tripod with ballhead, and my Mavic Air. All off this gear magically fits in and strapped onto my Lowepro sling-bag rather comfortably.

Feedback

Practice, practice, practice: if you love it, it doesn’t feel like work. Especially if I’m not contracted to shoot that day, and even though I’ve been a photographer for the last 20 years or so, I make a point of shooting for at least two hours a day. It’s not like I went out and just snapped a photograph like this and went home. Years of practice, building my craft, and finding my own style and voice in the world of photography happened before this. The best advice I have to obtained the level of photography that you want is just keep shooting. More specifically if you want to get shots like this you need to be patient and shoot around storms. Inclement weather is my secret ingredient; going out before and after storms is the best way to find moody skies and interesting/unique sunsets and sunrises that’ll stay with you for a lifetime.
