Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in an abandoned building in Izmail in 2012 or 2013. I was an amateur and wanted to have more practice and interesting shots in my portfolio.

Time

My favorite time of day is golden hour. During this magical time you can take amazing photos. On this location we came a bit earlier because I needed to look around, plus we wanted to leave that place before dark.

Lighting

There were many destroyed wooden doors and brick walls in this place but when I noticed this rusty stairs - I liked it a lot. The place was shady, but it make the atmosphere more interesting, more mystic. It was autumn and many brown and orange leaves were covering the ground so the color of the railing and the ground echoed. I think if we came to the location around 12pm (when the sun is high and brigt) I think the photos would not be as interesting and the place would lose its atmosphere.

Equipment

This shot was made on Canon 600D with 50mm f/1.4 lens. No other equipment was involved.

Inspiration

I was interested in working with people. I mean I wanted to learn how to make portraits, how to work with someone's emotions because it affects the end result as well not just the lightning, the location and your knowledge and equipment. I always followed the celebrities' photoshoots, what they did, what outfits they had and location they chose, their photos inspired me. Our town had a poor choice of locations, I needed something interesting, abandoned but at the same time safe place because the safety was my first priority too. Model should feel free and calm.

Editing

Yes, I wanted this shot look more cinematic so I processed it in Photoshop.I wanted to make the rust more vibrant and the blue deeper. And I changed a bit her skin tone because she was pale a bit.

In my camera bag

Since that time my style and my genre have changed. Now I am a wedding and family photographer so I have many different equipment in my bag. I use Canon R as a main and Canon Rp as a backup camera. I have 35 mm f/1.8 macro, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8, 24-70 f/2.8 lenses, I use them all for different scenes. I use a flashlight (3500K) to make interesting shots, mostly I use it for the backlight. On reportage shoots I use three Canon speedlights.

Feedback

First of all you need to talk more with your model during photoshoot so you can make her express the emotion you want. Sometimes its complicated to explain what emotion you want to see or the model can't do it, don't give up, take a little more time. Think about the idea, place and time - all this affects the result. Think over the idea, place and time - all this affects the result. Last but not least, you have to think about the model's outfit and make-up. The place, the look of the model and her mood should be a great, thoughtful mix.
