Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken during a walk in the morning with my dog Happy, on a cold, freezing day.

Time

It was taken in the morning, around 7 am. It was the first day in 2017, where the ground and the plants were frozen. I was looking for interesting plants, patterns or for some frosty details with not too much in the background until I found this one. So I lane down on the ground and took the shot and try to get a nice clear, detailed part of the plant without disturbing elements behind.

Lighting

I was lucky, then it was early in the morning, in perfect light conditions, not to much sun, and nice reflections.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5d III and an EF 100 Macro f 2.8, handheld, without a tripod. Normally I have most of the time my 5d and an EF 50 f 1.4 with me, but for details, I need something with less distance to my subject.

Inspiration

I really like to go out in the morning with my dog. I have great light, time for myself during he is running around and just taking pictures for fun, not for clients. I like the fine details, the reflections, the small wonders and the beauty of mother nature. Capturing and showing a piece of it, makes me happy.

Editing

Pictures with fine details need postprocessing because of sharpness, corrections of colorcast... In this picture I changed the color temperature, I worked on the right angle by cropping it, the background is also always important, it must be clear and not disturbing and the sharpening for the details is also a must.

In my camera bag

It depends on what I'm looking for. If I just shooting for myself, I normally go with a Canon 5d III, an EF 50 f 1.4, and an EF 24-105 f 4. For my work with clients, I have a huge bag with 2 bodies (Canon 5D III, Canon 6D) and a couple of lenses (17-40 mm f4, 50 mm f 1.4, 85 mm f 1.8, 24-105 mm f 4, 100 mm f 2.8 Macro, 70-200 mm f 4) and some Flashes with wireless triggers, stands, and a good tripod from Manfrotto.

Feedback

Just go outside and have fun. Look for the small things and don't be afraid to go deep and laying on the ground. Maybe it's cold or wet but finding the right angle is worth it.
