I once had to portage through a burnt down forest. The going was extremely difficult, and I used the excuse of taking photos as reason to take many breaks. The bleak landscape was amazing, and some of my favourite shots from that trip were captured on that portage. This is a shot of a Jack Pine standing tall with cones still attached to its few remaining branches. Fire is necessary for the Jack Pine species to reproduce, so this tree is likely thankful for the destruction around it.
