this photo was taken at Portland Victoria Australia - the harbor fronts onto the CBDTime
the photo was taken about two in the afternoonLighting
it was the middle of winter and i had been waiting for a day with better light to take the photo - finally a day came with good lightEquipment
the photo was taken with a Canon E0S 7d Markii - hand held with a 100-400mm lensInspiration
my home city is surrounded by sea on three sides. there are a number of gannet colonies within a ten kilometre radius. in the winter of 2016 for the first time in the 45 years i have been living in the area a huge school of pilchards moved into the bay. on the first day at least a 1000 birds were diving on the fish among the breakwaters of the harbor giving an amazing view of the spectacular. the fish stayed in the are for a number of weeks and evntually were schooled daily into a area where you could stand and watch just ten metres from where the action was. I went down a number of times trying to get decent photos, but on the day this photo was taken the light was perfect and in the right spot and i finally grabbed some good shots of the action.Editing

for me it was purely patience and perseverance. i would have tried to photograph the birds over at least 7 days, each time learning a bit more about their actions and when was the best time to try and get the best shot. also it allowed me time to experiment to find out what worked with the camera settings
