I took this photo in Cologne. Sometimes it is not easy to find beautiful staircases but if you keep your eyes open you will find more than you've expected. A lot of older buildings have awesome staircases because they were the lifeline of a house. Even if this yellow one is located in a modern building a lot of staircases have been built nowadays are only simple and pragmatic.Time
The picture was taken on a early Saturday afternoon. Looking for stairs in the week will probably have much more success because a lot of buildings are closed at the weekend.Lighting
I always shoot with available light. Using a tripod is not possible most of the time when shooting stairs. Therefore early afternoons without direct sun light are ideally suited.Equipment
I used a Canon 70d with the EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. The focal length was chosen as wide as possible: 18mm. The other settings were ƒ6.3, 1/8s and ISO 320.Inspiration
I love photos of spiral staircases. You use stairs every day but the vertical view is outstanding. Especially in this case I love to compare the staircase with a lemon peel cut off in one part.Editing
Shooting in RAW gave me the opportunity to optimized contrast, sharpness and color saturation in post production at a high level of quality. The basic adjustments were processed in Lightroom. In Photoshop I did some local corrections. In my camera bag
I love wide angle shots why I often use the Sigma 8-16mm F4,5-5,6 DC. The lens with which I've took this picture was replaced by a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2,8 L II USM recently. I also have a Canon 70 - 200 but I rarely use it. Depending on the situation I use a big and solid or small and light tripod from Manfrotto. To hike to landscape photography spots I carry two flashlights with me and always have a second pair of warm and dry socks in my bag.Feedback
How I've mentioned before a lot of old buildings have beautiful staircases. Keep your eyes open, sometimes it is possible to see the staircase from the streets if a door is open. Most of my staircase photos were taken in public buildings. Asking for permission politely to take some pictures of "this beautifuuuuul staircase there" will avoid a lot of trouble with security and in the majority of cases I was allowed to take the pictures. Finding a good composition is quite easy. Looking down from the highest floor or laying on the bottom and point your camera up. You can try to variety the position of the center of the staircase. It doesn't have to be in the middle of the picture like in my case.
