Behind The Lens

Location

In Luxembourg city, on one of my photo walks around the city, always on the lookout for subjects and light.

Time

the time was early in the evening, late afternoon. The light had a softbox feeling to it with golden hour overtones.

Lighting

I always look for interesting angles, shade and light and colors. I mainly do Street photography, so there is no posing or adjusting lights. You have to work with what you got. That makes it challenging though :)

Equipment

In this case it was a Sony alpha a900 with a Minolta 50mm f1.7. I always use a battery grip which gives me extra battery capacity and makes the handling of the camera easier. I had it suspended from a shoulder harness (Rapidstrap). No other equipment needed or wanted.

Inspiration

I'm on the constant lookout for subjects to go with the light at that given moment. It could be a picture like this one, or just a wasted afternoon.

Editing

Not on this picture. The framing, the light, everything just came automatically.

In my camera bag

No bag, all I use hangs off my Rapidstrap. Usually the Sony alpha a900 body with a 50/1.7 Minolta or a 70-200 f2.8 Tamron. Sometimes I pocket a 35mm Minolta to switch out with the 50, but both lenses are light and small. I used to have a Sigma 50mm but it was too heavy :)

Feedback

Luxembourg was my home for almost two decades, so I know the city and the weather. It gives me a good idea on where and when I have the best chances for good pictures. But if you do not have that luxury, you need to do some research on the city you are going to. The relative height of buildings can influence the quality of the light and affect the mood of a scene. You can look at pictures from other photographers that went to the same city, either for inspiration or to gage the quality and mood of the light. Or you can go stand at a street corner and wait for something to happen. Street photography is an open book, anything is possible. Always remember, chase the light. The light is your friend.
