Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the deep forests of Norway

Time

Late afternoon

Lighting

I wanted to capture the golden colors is the forest as the sun was setting. The photo is back lit with the sun barely hiding behind the trees. Vaffel was so patient and a perfect model for this shot.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750 and a Tamron 24-70 mm f/2.8.

Inspiration

I wanted to do a dog portrait that also included some of the beautiful nature in Norway. This forest consist of really old trees and they have the most beautiful green colors. Lit by the warm light of the sun setting I thought it would make a perfect frame for the photo.

Editing

I lowered the highlights and brightend the shadows to bring out the colors. I also wanted a soft feel to the photo so I pushed clarity and saturation slightly down. The photo was shot handheld at a high ISO so I reduced some noise and sharpened. I also adjusted tone curves to bring out goldens and greens in the trees.

In my camera bag

When I do dog photography my 70-200 mm f/2.8 is essential. It´s great for portraits and action shots because of it´s low aperture, even though it´s heavy. I also carry the 24-70 mm f/2.8 for wider angel shots. I usually bring my 50 mm f/1.4 prime lens as well. Other than that a reflector might come in handy and for dog photography; always treats and toys.

Feedback

Shot in the late afternoon when the light is softer and not harsh as in the middle of the day. Find a great location and think about what you want to tell with your photo. Be prepared and know your gear, as the lighting can change very rapidly. You may only have a minute og two to get the shot you wanted. When it comes to dogs you must have a lot of patience and a sense of humor. To get calm and happy expressions from the dogs make sure that they enjoy the session and give them lots of treats.
