Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken on the sand dunes in Myall Lakes National Park in New South Wales, Australia. The model is my girlfriend Jess, who regularly models for my art nude series. This image is also part of a bigger body of work that I'm currently working on releasing in early 2017.Time
This image was shot on dusk when the light was nice and soft.Lighting
The lighting wasn't anything special due to the overcast sky blanketed in clouds, so I converted the image in post to monochrome to give the image a more sensual atmosphere while retaining the detail and grain from the use of a higher ISO that aided in shooting this handheld without a tripod.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mark II with the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L USM ultra wide angle lens. No flash or any other accessories were used.Inspiration
The inspiration behind this image would have to be Mother Nature. There's something very beautiful about the female anatomy and once combined with nature I feel the connection is strong. I like working with the compositional lines of people and incorporating it into nature to create images that flow with intimacy without being pornographic.Editing
The main adjustment I made was the conversion from colour to monochrome (black and white) and boosted the contrast slightly as well as the white and black levels to give the image more depth. I left the grain/digital noise visible to give the image texture, which I feel makes it look somewhat timeless. In my camera bag
My camera backpack usually consists of a Canon 6D with an array of lenses. My most used lens would be the Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 which I use for landscape and street photography when using the DSLR. Lately I've switched from DSLR over to mirrorless with the Fuji X100S. I prefer the more compact body, lightweight and performance in a small package over the bulkier DSLR system. I also carry a tripod whenever I'm shooting landscape, as well as an array of filters (polarisers, ND's etc).Feedback
Art nude as a photography genre can be very beautiful when done tastefully. I've seen some horrible 'art nudes' before which are more pornographic than arty. If anyone is interested in trying some nude photography for the first time I would suggest to start off semi clothed and ease your way into the shoot. Working with a model you know and are comfortable together makes your job and theirs a lot easier.
