Behind The Lens

Location

In my studio, in Miami Florida.

Time

Time flies when I'm in the studio, so it's hard to recall. Probably the evening.

Lighting

It was simply lit using a Large Chimera softbox from over head. Suspended by a large boom and powered by a Dynalite pack. It's a favorite combination for me when working with dynamic subjects in the studio.

Equipment

Pretty simple stuff. Canon 5d mark 2, we 24-105mm lens. Pocket wizard to trigger the Dynalite pack. Camera mounted on Cambo camera stand.

Inspiration

I work with many dancers and they often are eager to try just about any crazy idea. I've been playing with flour as a medium in photos for a while, but with minimal movement. Here, Melissa was able to add an explosion of flour while in mid air, for a spectacular effect.

Editing

None actually I wanted to tweak the face or background, but never really got around to it. I still might for a version number 2 :)

In my camera bag

Hmmm... it really depends on what I'm shooting, but on just about every session I will use no less than 2 cameras. Canon 5d, Cambo 4x5 studio camera, Polaroid 600se, Mamiya 645pro, and sometimes others. Various lenses for each. Tons of different film and Polaroid options too. Light meter, focusing loupe, wireless triggers, grey card... etc. I have a BIG bag :)

Feedback

The toughest part is catching the jump at its peak. It takes a lot of practice for the timing, but once you have that, it gets much easier to create more challenging images like this.
