Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at St Theobald's Church, Great Hautbois, Coltishall, Norfolk, England. We saw the ruins of an old church from the road on the way back from picking our daughter up from a nearby girl guiding centre where she had been on holiday with her Brownie unit, we decided to turn round and take a closer look. As a family we enjoy exploring old buildings and generally getting out with our cameras, it's a great way to spend time together doing something we all enjoy. While my husband was taking pictures of the main buildings me and my daughters decided to explore the grounds futher, and came across these gravestones one of which dated back to 1924, surrounded by the daffodils I couldn't resist taking the shot, it was such a contrast of life and death. These gravestones sparked big interest from my girls as before this visit they had only ever seen gravestones made from stone. We researched the church ruins when we got home and discovered the church dates back to the 11th century, and later had medieval alterations. Although the church is now mainly ruins the graveyard is still in use and the grounds are alive with wild flowers and wildlife.

Time

This photo was taken at around 1pm on a beautiful sunny day in April 2016.

Lighting

I took advantage of the natural light for this photograph, the sun was bright but slightly shaded by the trees, which gave the perfect highlight to the gravestones and the surrounding daffodils without getting any glare from the sun.

Equipment

This photograph was taken on a Nikon L830 camera, I had always had pocket sized point and shoot cameras but decided to upgrade to this camera last year and have no regrets, it's easy to use and always performs perfectly in whatever situation I decide to use it in. It's a brilliant camera with lots of great features and comfortable to use despite being bigger than the previous cameras I've used.

Inspiration

This picture caught my eye because of the life and death portrayed by the gravestones and the wild flowers growing around them I believed it portrayed life and death brilliantly and was a gentle reminder that life goes on.

Editing

I don't tend to edit my pictures they are normally uploaded straight from the memory card as I don't like to mess around with them to much as I really don't have a clue and end up making a half decent picture look awful. I am by no means a professional in photography or editing. I learn by trial and error and if I like the picture then I'm happy if somebody else likes the picture that is an added bonus. With this picture I did soften the edges a little but apart from that it's completely untouched!

In my camera bag

I always carry a spare memory card with me after going out for the day with my children and climbing to the top of the church tower at Cromer, 172 tiny twisty concrete steps to realise I had left my memory card in my laptop and could only take about three pictures with the internal memory of the camera. I also carry spare batteries, and a lens cleaning pen and cloth for obvious reasons.

Feedback

As previously said I am no professional my only advice would be get out their with your camera if you see something you like get snapping, take lots of pictures of anything that's sparks emotion in you, make some memories and have fun doing it.
