I took this photo in a bar on the riverfront in Savannah, GA.Time
This was an afternoon shot.Lighting
The bar had some large windows overlooking the river. Outside of studio lighting, it does not get better than natural light from a large window. It's like having a large soft box powered by the sun.Equipment
This was a handheld shot using my Canon 5D Mark iii with a 24-105mm lens.Inspiration
I am a portrait photographer. I do a lot of street portraits. I ask strangers if I can take their photos. This guy just looked cool. He looked like the Dos Equis man. I told him that and he told me that he gets that a lot. He was standing in the perfect lighting. I asked if I could take his portrait.Editing
I edited this in Lightroom. I obviously converted this photo to black and white. I bumped up the contrast, clarity, and shadows, and dropped the blacks. I usually shoot slightly under exposed an use the radial filter to brighten the face.In my camera bag
I usually don't carry a bag when I am shooting street portraits. I carry Canon 5D Mark iii with a 24-105mm lens on a strap over my shoulder. It's the most versatile for my shooting style when I am on the street. I keep a spare battery in my pocket. I have a variety primes that use in the studio.Feedback
If you are shooting portraits, find a large indirect natural light source like a window or a door. I usually shoot a variety of angles if the subject is open to it. Some people look better being lit from the side and some look better with a flat direct light. It just depends on the subject and the look you are going for. I like a fairly large aperture, 4.5-7.1, for portraits. I usually shoot slightly underexposed. Then, shoot many and show few.
