Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the top of Schloss Thun (castle) while living in Switzerland. You could see the majority of the city of Thun from the tower as well as Lake Thun which leads the popular tourist city of Interlaken.

Time

I was traveling back from Interlaken by boat in order to catch my train in Thun to go home to Geneva. I had some time to spend in Thun so I decided to visit Schloss Thun in the mean time. This photo was taken in the early afternoon (approximately 2 pm). It was taken through the window at the top of the castle which helped prevent a lot of lens glare.

Lighting

I love using natural lighting. Usually taking photographs in the middle of the day causes harsh lighting and causes a lot of lens glare. Out in the open, I usually use a polarizer filter and a lens hood. However for this photograph, I was indoors shooting out of a window so I used neither.

Equipment

For this photograph, I was still using my old Canon EOS Rebel T3i with the EF-S 18-55mm IS II Lens. Since this photo, I have upgraded to a full frame camera for better landscape photography. I was on the go since I had a train to catch, and with the bright beautiful sunlight day, I did not use a tripod.

Inspiration

While living in Switzerland, I fell in love this country. In the summer, the country is filled with vivid green valleys, jagged blue snow capped mountains, and mirrored cyan skies and lakes. The cities are beautiful meshing of old and new architecture as you can see in this photo with the old church in the foreground and the modern train station in the background. This picture summarized the beauty of this country in one picture and why I fell in love with it.

Editing

There was minimal if no post-processing at all! It was an absolutely beautiful day that I was lucky to have capture.

In my camera bag

Before I upgraded, I would carry by Canon EOS Rebel T3i, the EF-S 18-55mm IS II lens, EF-S 55-250 IS II telephoto lens, a polarizer filter, ND filters, Canon Speedlite 430EX II Flash, lens hoods, and a tripod. Now besides the above camera and lenses, I carry a Canon 5D Mark III, EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens, and EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens. My husband has recently gotten interested in photography so he has taken possession of and carries my old camera and lenses. We like to swap and share the cameras with each other depending on what we want to shoot at the time.

Feedback

Get out and explore even if you are just waiting for your train, plane, etc. There is beauty all around us waiting to be captured. On the day I took this picture, I had just under and hour in the city of Thun before my train would leave. Instead of waiting at the train station, I decided to explore an old castle on the hill which was quite a hike and not close to the train station. I would have never seen the city at this view if I had just waited at the train station. Now, I did have to sprint the station to catch my train, but it was worth it to see and capture a beautiful view. I have since moved away from Switzerland, but I will always have this photo to remember the beautiful memories I made in such a great country!
