The photo was taken from a little boat on the Rufiji River - Selous - South of TanzaniaTime
It was the second day of my safari on the Rufiji River. We were two people plus the "captain". It was early morning and the big hippo dislike our presence!Lighting
The light was perfectEquipment
When I'm travel for Safari I use Canon 1Ds Mark II and 5dmk3, no flash, no tripod. My favourite lens for that situation are 100/400, 300/2.8 and 24/105. When I took the Hippo photo I had with me also a 500/4 lens. All lens by Canon Eos. The hippo photo was taken with 1Ds Mark II and 300/2.8.Inspiration
I tried many time to describe the forcefulness/power of that great and "nice" animal... in this photo I find it...my opinionEditing
The only post processing was from colour to BWIn my camera bag
Canon for Safari and nature in general, Leica M and Sony A7rII for landscape, street, people, etc.Feedback
Wake up early morning, take patient and to have power on your hands to take Canon 1Ds Mark II and 300/2.8 without tripod (it's difficult to use tripod inside a little boat about 4 m long). In Africa is very easy to meet hippos and if you want to take an original picture is necessary lot of time in the same place with the same hippos. They rest a lot all together and if you want some action you need to have patience (a lot) or, but I'm not suggest you!, you can try to go very close to them...they don't love it...and then is very easy that the hippos moved (and hope not towards you...)
