Shot on location, my aim was to produce a low key image using only available light, using the dark stable as a background and stopping down in camera i was able to capture the image I was afterTime
Shot in late August in the afternoon using the warm bright sunlight, I had to wait until the sun moved into the right position to light the shot, but thankfully the horse was quite happy to wait with me.Lighting
As I have said above this is shot using only available light, shot in the late summer early autumn so as to get bright light but not to high, I had to wait until the sun moved round and lit the horse as I had hoped, and thankfully some had built the stable in the right place allowing the low sun to create the effect I was after.Equipment
Hand held canon 5D ii with a 100-400 5.6 lensInspiration
My work is based on animals and animal portraits and I always strive to shoot in an intriguing way that allows the subject to shine, its an ever evolving style that is created by my mind and the subject in front of meEditing
I shoot in raw, so all my images are post-processed in lightroom, where I adjust the levels, change to B/W and adjust blacks, whites shadows etc, I do have a number of presets that I use, that have been developed through trial and error over the years. In my camera bag
i have shot with canon for nearly 30 years, so my bag has mainly canon equipment - canon 5D iii & 5D ii's, 100-400 , 24-105 canon EF L lenses and a Sigma 150-600 sports lens, I try to keep things simple so as not to waste time changing lenses so with these three lenses I can cover most eventualitiesFeedback
Although the image looks simple it is quite hard to achieve in a natural way, try to get as close as you can in camera, to much post process can make it look a bit contrived I do have a large black background (6m x 3.5m) that I use if I can't get the background dark enough, make sure that the subject is well lit, but not to dark/light you can and I do use an LED light to highlight the eyes if needed, really the best advice is be prepared for any eventuality but try to keep it as simple as possible.
