This photo was actually taken in the living room of my clients home! Big sister had just come home from school, and is so totally in love with her new baby sister. Watching them together this year has been such a joy. Sisters are so wonderful.Time
This was late afternoon, the children were coming home from school. Light filtered softly from the large windows. It was such a serene feeling, looking at that precious newborn face an hearing the neighborhood children giggling outside as they walked home.Lighting
I wanted the light to be soft and natural, so I only used the big window and some soft white reflectors to bounce a little bit of softness.Equipment
Nikon D8000, 35mm Nikon Art Lens, white reflector boards, no artificial light or flash.Inspiration
I was inspired by love. The love of family. The joy of a new addition. The peace of seeing a newborn face. The love of a protective big sister.Editing
I did just a little lightening and smoothing in Lightroom. Truly, this image didn't need much.In my camera bag
I am a huge fan of Nikon fine art lenses. I love my 35mm, as well as my 85mm. I treat my glass like babies so I must have a full cleaning kit, and a range of lens hoods.Feedback
Newborns are humans, after all. Go with the flow if you are going to photograph a newborn. Some, like this little doll will sleep. Some will only want to be awake. Some will need mama nearby. Some will be fine if mama goes and takes a nap. Don't plan so much that you cannot capture their personality.
