Points for getting them to keep still but, seriously, a wonderful portrait of this feline family. Lighting, composition, focus...all superbly done.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was made on location in the clients backyard using a mini couch and white drop to preserve the background and provide some containment for the kittens. White vinyl drop for background and mini-couch set on existing client picnic table.

Time

Late in the afternoon.

Lighting

We were outdoors using natural light, but I also had 2 Nikon speedlights to provide fill and brighten the scene.

Equipment

Nikon D800; 24-70mm lens, SB910 and SB900, Gitzo tripod

Inspiration

These kittens were rescued by my clients while they were on vacation in Tennessee. They found them and their mother starving to death in a storm drain, called the authorities to have them fished out and took them to the local shelter. The local shelter was full, so the couple cancelled their return flight home to NJ, rented a car, and brought momma and her litter of kittens back home so no one would be PTS due to lack of space. When this client contacted me with a story of such great karma, I had to jump...we made the shot with all of them after just a few attempts...they really were quite comfortable being in close quarters with each other. Happily, momma and 1 of the kittens stayed with the couple who found them, and the rest have been adopted to loving homes in NJ.

Editing

White balancing, some vibrance and clarity and not much else. Normally I love popping some enhancement into the iris, but decided against it this time to allow those still blue sets of eyes to stare back at the viewer. This is not a composited shot.

In my camera bag

I take my D800, 24-70, 50 1.4g; 105 macro and 70-200mm with me everywhere...then add others based on the job. I love the look I get shooting my 85mm 1.4d wide open, but sometimes like the look better with the 50.

Feedback

The top two priorities for me since we were shooting with kittens outside was their safety....creating an area they couldn't get away and we could safely handle them and having enough handlers to keep them secure (I had 3). Secondarily, was creating the opportunity to get them looking @ the camera simultaneously, and coming up with a noise/sound that would pique their interest without scaring them. That took some trial and error.
