Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in South Korea when I was stationed there in the U.S. Army.

Time

I believe it was taken in the afternoon

Lighting

Most of the lighting was artificial. I had to do some creative editing to bring out lightness and more detail without "over cooking" the image.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 40d and 50mm lens. No tripod or flash.

Inspiration

I loved the all the variations of the color blue in the shot. You have dark and light tones that just sort of work together. I knew I had to try my best to capture it.

Editing

I used Lightroom for minor adjustments and then edit in photoshop for some of the bigger edits. I had to do some detail extracting as well as dodging, burning, and color balancing.

In my camera bag

I use a MindShift Gear camera bag. I currently carry a Canon 5d and 7d with various lenses, a tripod, external flash, portable flash diffuser, remote shutter release, extra batteries and memory cards, stickers, business cards, good luck charms, a camel back for hydration, and a tourniquet with basic first aid essentials just in case.

Feedback

Shooting something similarly can be tricky because the lighting is really a wild card and shooting high ISOs really produces a LOT of noise with a background like that. Try scoping out the scene on really sunny days with little to no overcast for optimal lighting. If shooting under water you can also get creative with waterproofing work lamps and such as long as you have a boat with power outlets and you don't fully submerge the light source. Try this technique at your own risk and be smart about it. Your working with electricity and water so you really need to be extremely careful.
