Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a restaurant owned by my client. This was a big deal for me, since I was doing food photography for the first time, and is part of the first series of food shots I've ever done was back in 2013.

Time

I coordinated with the owner and we both agreed to have the shoot after Maghrib, which was roughly about 6-6:30'ish in the evening. I didn't have flash at the time, and I relied on artificial lighting because this was an indoor shoot.

Lighting

Since I was very much green at the time I did this shoot, I wasn't that knowledgeable of strobes and flashes. Much of what I know were make shift devices or alternatives to provide me sufficient light. It's important to share this: take photography one step at a time, and not to skip a lesson, especially when a photographer is learning by him/herself.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7000 with an MC-DC2 remote release cord. I also used a Sigma 70-300mm and mounted my camera on a SLIK Tripod with a ball head kit, to ensure stability while I took the shot.

Inspiration

I challenged myself. I was relatively new, it was my first dslr, and people were liking my photos, enough to pay me to shoot for them. It was exhilarating to know that people appreciate you and your talent enough to pay for it.

Editing

Just a few minor tweaks with the color, contrast and sharpness of the photo. I like the photos flat as they come, and adjust it to my liking. I used lightroom in the process.

In my camera bag

I bring different gears depending on the occasion, location and situation. I find it convenient to bring a Nikon D750 and a Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 lens: a combo perfect for portraits. Sometimes, I would also bring a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 for group photos or landscapes. If and when necessary, I would also bring my SLIK or Manfrotto tripods.

Feedback

It's important to know beforehand the location, time of the day, duration of the activity, and motif of the event you will be attending. This will help you decide the best equipment to bring.
