Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken in my bedroom as that's where a teenager seems to spend most of their time. My room is where I fell in love with literature and developed a strong imagination and gift for storytelling. As such it is only fitting that I took this photo in a room of creativity.Time
I remember trying on all my masks and twirling around, pretending to be dancing at a masquerade. It was in the evening and the inspiration hit me to photograph my mask and capture that moment of imagination.Lighting
I hadn't thought too much about the lighting at the time and there were no extra lights other than my room's regular light fixture. While side lighting could have made this close up more intriguing or mysterious, I wanted to capture the sparkles and details of the mask, so I figured positioning the camera between the light and myself would work best.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT.Inspiration
I've always loved the masquerade and have accumulated a collection of masks that I only get to wear on Halloween. I tried to capture my passion for creativity and the arts through this self-portrait.Editing
In Photoshop I altered the highlights and shadows to create a more appealing image. I also converted this image to black and white. In my camera bag
I love photography but unfortunately do not own a camera, and can only use what is available to me at the time. I switch between Nikon and Canon, most often using my mom's Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT, though ideally I would use a better macro lens than the standard 18-55mm one.Feedback
To capture a similar photo I would suggest to not try too hard to stage the photo but just take it in the moment that inspiration hits. At least that's when I produce my best work. To create a similar photograph, the photographer would require a mask, a model (or themselves) and creativity.
