Behind The Lens

Location

I took this at Thunder Valley, Motocross Park, Lakewood, Colorado just outside Denver.

Time

I was shooting from mid to late afternoon.

Lighting

Thy were sunny conditions so I was continually moving around in order to keep the light from being a problem.

Equipment

The Canon 40D was my main camera at that time. It was a stellar camera for me, but when the 7D came out I bought one giving the 40D to my son who has and uses it to this day. The only lens I used was the Tamron, f/2.8 macro. No telephotos. I had just purchased it and wanted to see how it performed. No tripod or image stabilization.

Inspiration

I am always looking for inspiring moments. As a photographer I find myself viewing everything in relation to photography. It can be really bad if I find myself presented with an opportunity and my camera is at home. However, my wife and I were out for a drive, (I believe we were going to Red Rocks) when that inspirational moment was provided. Off the highway were all these riders pulling off huge jumps and stunts. Needless to say we skipped Red Rocks that day!

Editing

The only processing done was basic editing. Color correction, sharpening and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

At that time I had The 40D as well as a 30D. A Sigma 150 mm, f/2.8 macro. A Tamron, 70-200mm f/2.8, Sigma 18-50 mm f/2.8-4.5 mm, Canon 50 mm F/1.8 and a Tamron f/2.8 90 mm Macro. I had a major open heart surgery and presently using an Olympus Micro Four Thirds system. Much easier to haul around....

Feedback

Talk to the people that are there. Get to know what it is that they enjoy and make sure to ask if they mind you shooting. I soon had access to the whole track and as you can see I was below this rider soaring above me. The more they know you are their to show them and their talents to the world the more they will show to you.
