Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a large flower field, my model (which is a friend of mine) showed me. I haven't been there before and I didn't really know how it looked like and if it was a good place for shooting, so it was spontaneous and I'm glad it turned out to be perfect for the photos I wanted to take.

Time

We met on an afternoon in June, had to walk some time to get to the meadow and we took photos until about five or six pm. The sun was still shining bright when we were finished.

Lighting

I almost always use avaliable light only. That can be quite tricky sometimes but I don't need an assistant, don't have to carry anything else than my small camera bag with me and wouldn't it be boring without a challenge? By now, I think I got pretty good at playing with the avaliable light situations. I always like backlight, it softens the light and doesn't cast any harsh shadows..

Equipment

I shoot with a Sony SLT-A55V, with a 50mm Minolta-lens, aperture was 3.5 in this shot, with an exposure-time of 1/640. No tripod, no flash, not even a bouncer, altough I could really have used one.

Inspiration

I really like making flower braids/crowns, so I just randomly started braiding on my way to the location.. we just wanted to make some portraits, by that time I haven't really found my 'photography-style' yet, I knew it should be somehow dreamy, with flowers and soft light - here it is. When I saw my model sit between all the flowers, the sun lighting up her hair from the back, I knew that was a great 'move towards finding my style'.

Editing

I don't do much post-processing anymore, adjusting the curves, maybe deleting one or two spots, this time I brightened the face a little - could have used a bouncer, I know, but I guess I'm too idle to look for one.

In my camera bag

I don't have that much of equipment, there's my camera, a Sony SLT-A55V, I call her 'Fly', my all-time-favourite f 2.8 50mm Macro lens from Minolta, another lens, 18-200, f 3.5 -6.3, Sigma for Sony, which I bought for photographing a wedding but don't use that often. I have a polarizing filter, a 8GB SD-Card (I should really buy some more) and a second accumulator (which was expensive enough). In my bag there's also a pack of handkerchiefs and at least one pen - don't ask why, I don't really know.

Feedback

I don't see myself professional enough to give really useful advice, but what I had to keep an eye on when taking this photo was the framing, not to get too bright (my electronic viewfinder shows the image somehow darker than it actually is and you can't just darken overexposed pictures) and to have focus on the model's eyes, 'cause my lens is kinda tricky there... Also it's beneficial to have the camera at the models eye level, I guess.
