Behind The Lens
Location
This photo was taken from my hotel window in Kuching In Borneo and is of the truly amazing parliament building and surrounds.Time
The image was taken just after dusk. I had been watching dragon boat practice racing on the water and returned to my room to get ready for the evening. I managed to set up my tripod and capture this image before leaving.Lighting
It was important that the light from the roof of the building was dominant, but what I was trying to capture was the matching colour in the sky. This was only present for a few minutes.Equipment
This was shot on a Pentax K10D with a DA* 50-135mm lens at 135mm mounted on a tripod. I used an 8 second exposure at f6.7Inspiration
The shape of the building and its lighting along with the reflection of the lights in the water made a compelling composition.Editing
I used almost no post processing. I adjusted the exposure slightly and lifted the shadows a little in Lightroom. In my camera bag
Depending on where I going and luggage restrictions I take different kit with me. However, I always take a tripod so I can capture long exposures from hotel windows and of the sky when travelling. Lens choice depends on length of stay and what I am doing. It could be a flexible 17-55mm lens and a longer alternative such as a 50-135mm or 60-250mm. Alternatively, for quick trips where I am travelling light, I may take only a compact 15mm and 35mm macro. I usually take a polarising filter and dense ND filter for long exposures.Feedback
Be prepared to be in your hotel room before dusk! I always try and get a hotel room that is as high as I can to improve views. Try and shoot through an open window or from a balcony. If you have to shoot through glass turn all of the lights off in the room to avoid reflections.
