Location
I am a self taught photographer, and have been over a period of 6 years. This photo was taken down at Gwithian in Cornwall on a rather windy day. I just loved the way this damsel fly peered at me through the grasses. It was taken back in July 2013 at 100 mm macro.Time
The light was fading and this photograph was taken at f4 to focus on this immense eye and give an uncluttered background.Lighting
I used an on camera flash to pick up the hairs and minute detail in the face.Equipment
I tend to hand hold when taking insects, animals etc as they move very fast and it's not always convenient to use a tripod in these circumstances.Inspiration
I am always trying to catch dragonflies etc. My greatest challenge was to catch one in flight, which I have since accomplished.Editing
Small amount of processing in RAW.In my camera bag
I now have a Canon 5D mk iii. Lenses 100mm macro, 70-200mm & 100-400m telephoto, 16-35mm wide angle and a 24-70mm general purpose lens. I have a 580 EXii flashlight, and curly cord. Remote trigger, and I do like my Lee 10 stopper.Feedback
Having gained experience since this photograph and how critique views change. I would use F8 and above, iso below 400, and shutter speed as high as possible if moving. I do like using flash to infill shadows.
