This is an image of a section of one of our beautiful volcanos in Costa Rica.

I simply had to capture all the movement in this amazing station. Wanted to capture all the people walking by at just a couple of seconds.

A double exposure direct in the camera with 2 flashes. The only editing was the colors in the picture.

Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home studio. I made a set with a white background paper in the wall and all necessary equipment there to make it possible.

Time

This is what a studio (doesn't matter if it's a home or professional studio, because as long as it's well set up both of them have great impact on the final picture) is amazing for, if it's day or night, you can control the settings on the flashes as you like.

Lighting

On double exposure photos, lightning is truly important. Specially on those you take directly from the camera (because there's the type of double exposure photos all handled with photoshop; this one is organic) because the section of the first photo, that has darker tones in the histogram, are the areas that will be filled with the information of the second picture, in this case the second picture was the "coffee beans picture"; so also the light of the second picture is super important. In the case of this image I left the flashes in the same intensity on both pictures, but on the second photo I actually decreased the exposure settings in the camera. This was one of my first pictures handling double exposure, and the funny part is that I learnt doing this by my own. So the lightning on this picture was a "try and fail" process.

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 70D with a tripod and the setting on "timer" (because is a self portrait...I actually was on my PJ's!, I love taking pictures doesn't matter when), with a canon24-70mm f2.8 i lens and 1 Canon 430ex ii flash with stand and umbrella.

Inspiration

I always love to think "outside of the box", and one day I made a research on artistic type of photos, and I saw this type of pictures and I fell in love. However I saw that the majority of this images on the web are manipulated with software, so I started to take a look of ways to take this photos organically. Then I found out that the Canon 70D has this amazing setting, I changed my older camera to this one, and then I started thinking on a topic for this ongoing portfolio of double exposure. So the topic is about Psalm 139, and this talks about the identity of yourself. So the idea of this images is to "fill out" the image of the person, with something that they truly love. In my case... is Costa Rica and it's coffee!

Editing

As I mentioned in some other questions, the heavier part of the image handling is organic. The photo was taken in RAW and there the Image was set to grayscale, then moved a little whites whiter an blacks darker. When opened in Photoshop, I used a minimum white brush to clean the whiter parts.

By the moment I took the photo the equipment is different for what I have now. Now I switched to the following "lovely toys": Canon 6D (of course! it has the double exposure setting!) Canon 50mm 1.2, 2 Yongnuo YN560 iv flashes with it's respective stands and softboxes (handling lightning is what I love), 1 light diffuser and 1 Fluid head tripod (I also make videos... and yes, double exposure videos as well, but this cannot be made organic!).

Feedback

First, find a camera that has "multiple exposure" setting. If your camera doesn't have this setting you're screwed...oh wait, yes there's the photoshop option... but the funny part is taking this photos with the camera. This photos are definitely about "try and fail" and play with the exposure settings. If you add the flash part, is another element to play with. And the last thing I recommend is: Be patient. It may not look "cool" at the beginning, but when you start understanding the mix of the photos with the histogram, it will look amazing.
