This photo was taken Christmas morning at my home in Minnesota. Our chocolate lab had died earlier in the year and my dad was still struggling with her absence. My brother and I decided to surprise him with a silver lab. WhenTime
Morning light, but not too early.Lighting
I love using soft, diffuse window light. This picture was under the Christmas tree and was lit entirely from the entire wall of windows that is to the left of the puppy as can be seen from the shadowing on her face.Equipment
The image was shot with a Canon 5D Mark II with a 50mm 1.4. No frills.Inspiration
Our chocolate lab had died earlier in the year and my dad was still struggling with her absence. My brother and I decided to surprise him with a silver lab. The morning of Christmas he was cleaning the house and doing some meal prep. We told him that we had a present that we wanted him to open early because he would need it for the day. He kept pushing it off, saying let me finish this, let me finish that. Meanwhile, the puppy was in a box in the middle of the living room. Finally, we forced him to sit down and thrust this box upon him.Editing
I typically always shoot raw and prefer to use VSCO presents with small changes after that.In my camera bag
I usually carry a Canon 5D mark ii with the 50mm on it, but lately have been getting into Fujifilm x100t as it is so portable and forces me to move around. Updated retro.Feedback
I think there are 2 big points of this picture. The first being the spot on focus. If you can get the focus of the image sharp, and in this case with a narrow depth to emphasize the subject while creating a nice effect with the Christmas lights, it creates an interesting image. The second important component of this photo is the lighting. The diffuse window illumination creates a very soft image.
