Behind The Lens
Location
Photo was taken at Bethesda Terrace in Central Park, NYC.Time
Afternoon.Lighting
One reason Bethesda Terrace attracts many photographers is the extraordinary light. It is a vast interior space, with interesting architecture, that is illuminated by natural light entering through large openings on the north and south sides. The light is therefore strong, diffuse, and directional, which is ideal for portraits, thus, there are almost always some wedding photographers at work.Equipment
Pentax digital SLR, handheld, no flash, 40mm lens.Inspiration
The hands belong to a perfomer by the name of Thoth who plays the violin, sings and dances as part of a duo called Tribal Baroque. He was resting after a show when I noticed his expressive hands.Editing
I converted the image from color to sepia toned black and white with Nik Silver Efex Pro.In my camera bag
Just one camera and a few lenses. I prefer primes to zooms, and usually carry a 21, 40, and 70mm lens (Pentax pancakes).Feedback
I have come to know Thoth and have seen him perform many times, thus he is comfortable and relaxed when I am photographing him. I was probably chatting with him when I took the photo, though it is not posed. I just try to stay alert for interesting expressions, and of course favorable light.
