Location
This is a rather famous location in Yosemite Park in California. It is called "Valley View. Yosemite is one of my favorite places on earthTime
I shot this on a tripod, I think that it was about 330-4 in the afternoon as the sun was getting low in the sky. Was the 4th of January, so the days (for California) were short.Lighting
I waited to revisit this spot until the sun was lower to get nice lighting and relief in the rock formationsEquipment
I shot this with a Canon EOS 1DS MKIII and the EF 17-40 f/4L at f/10 and 1/60th. The lens was all the way to the wide endInspiration
The Awe inspiring Yosemite. I usually burn thru most of my memory cards whenever I visit the parkEditing
I used lightroom and photoshop. I converted it to B&W and dogged and burned some areas, burning in El Capitan and dodging the trees in the mid ground as I recallIn my camera bag
In my bag usually is a tough question. However, most of the time, in my think tank bag, I carry the 1Ds MKIII with the MKII as a backup, but maybe just in the car, unless I am shooting action, in which case, they both are out, one with a long lens and one with something shorter. My typical lens assortment is the EF 17-40 f/4L (because I think that is is sharper and a lot less expensive than the 16-35), EF 24-70 f/2.8L and the EF 70-200 f/2.8L. Depending on what I am doing I might be dragging the ef 500mm f/4L in a think tank glass taxi on my back or the EF 80mm f/1.2L (this lens has the most amazing boken and a VERY short depth of field). I think that on this day (as usual unless shooting with the big glass) I had the little Giottos travel tripod, because I like the lightness of the carbon fiber and the way that the legs fold back on themselves to save space. That and a ballhead.Feedback
Much of what I would say here is above, but.... Yosemite is a magic place. because it is a deep valley, the light changes rapidly. When visiting the park, use your compass and determine where the sun will be and when. Mirror lake works best in the morning, the valley view, glacier point and the tunnel view work in the evening. I found this log laying in the river and used it to make a leading line along with the rivers edge. I was pretty close to the ground. I think that black and white especially depend on the graphical elements in the photo, so I was careful to include an interesting fore, mid and background. The other tip that I can add is visualize. I knew how I wanted this photo to look before I even set up the camera.
