I am a Chicago girl who lived in Michigan for about 1.5 years. Missing Chicago TERRIBLY, I turned it into a joke that Michigan didn’t like me and that it would constantly remind me so I would leave. As a result, I recently moved back to Chicago (8/1/20). In reality, Michigan is a beautiful state and was very kind to me. It gave me the opportunity to shoot a lot of beautiful nature, including this picture, taken in June of 2020.Time
I remember this day quite well! The day before taking it, I had a virtual appointment with my doctor. He asked me how my photography was going and reminded me that I still hadn’t sent him one of my pictures. He also mentioned that he was going out of town the next day and would NOT be checking emails while gone. However, he was going to check them one last time before leaving, from 10:00am - 11:30am. I had a deadline! I wanted a nice NEW shot, hoping to impress him (he is the BEST doctor, extremely well respected). The morning is my favorite time to shoot. I planned to get up early that next day, ensuring enough time to get that perfect shot taken then sent at the BEGINNING of his ‘last email check window of time.’ 10:00am - 11:30am. I’ve always been an early bird, but my internal alarm clock chose to wake me...at 11:04am!!!!! Panic!!!!! In the t-shirt and shorts that I slept in, this photo was taken 10 minutes after waking up...11:14am on June 24, 2020. P.S. I had it emailed to my doctor at 11:17am, and he has since confirmed that he DID see it prior to go on vacation. He was “quite impressed” and found it “very beautiful.” Yes, it was worth it.Lighting
As I mentioned above, the morning is my favorite time to take pictures. Particularly when the sun is shining. In my personal experience, most pictures taken then require little to no editing. Most, not all! Having only a brief window of time to get this picture taken and sent off, I was lucky to get such a beautiful and very sunny morning.Equipment
Once again, I was quite pressed for time to take this picture. That really is an understatement. As a result, it was taken with my iPhone 8Plus!Inspiration
My doctor! I’ve been going to him for several years and he’s not only a truly fabulous doctor, he is a wonderful person in so many ways. He was genuinely interested in my photography and for a long time had been asking to see one of my pictures. I really enjoy photos taken at this angle with a sunny and bright blue sky background. I value my doctor’s opinion and not just medically. I wanted to do my best to impress him and get his feedback. Without a doubt, he was my inspiration.Editing
I didn’t do one single thing post processing for this picture. There is zero editing of any kind!In my camera bag
I have loved and have been taking pictures for as long as I can remember, yet it has only been about 3 years since becoming serious about photography. Serious meaning that I began considering photography as a profession. Up until just 1 year ago I was using my iPhone 8 Plus, nothing else. I can not lie, I chose this specific version based solely on the camera features and great feedback about the wonderful picture quality it produced. It truly does take excellent quality pictures that are superior to newer phone versions, in my opinion. That being said, I was handed down a Canon EOS 5D last year. At 15 years old, I’m impressed with it!! I’ll spare you the list of things I find really great about it. I really do love the camera on my iPhone AND my old Canon. Both have produced some darn good pictures! Funny timing on this question, as I am finally in the market for a new camera. I’m currently researching and researching some more so I can decide what equipment will be in my bag. Ask me again in a few months??Feedback
My advice in trying to capture a similar photo? I happened to be laying on my stomach and looking up to achieve the shot I was going for. I like and wanted a picture at this angle. Perhaps I should advise some stretching out prior to heading out? In all seriousness, my advice for all pictures is really quite basic: 1). Be patient. 2). Take your time while shooting and at the same time, take several shots of your subject. 3). As silly as it sounds, don’t be afraid to do what it takes (like laying on your stomach in public) to achieve your goal for your picture. Yes, this is pretty basic, but it’s also the
