Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot on a country road just north of 100 Mile House, BC, Canada. We were taking our dog for a walk and the sky suddenly got very dark. We have had a very rare tornado touch down, fortunately this didn't develop into a funnel cloud.

Time

This was shot in the evening. about a half hour before sunset. The different layers of clouds let through some light as the storm clouds got darker. It was taken on August 11, 2019 at 7:55 PM.

Lighting

I found the layers of cloud above the storm in the background that were being lite by the sun's reflection lent to the dark fierce lower clouds of the storm and the way the clouds were twisting gave a lot of interest to the photo.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5600 with a Nikon DX VR 18-140 mm lens. Exposure was 1/160 sec. Aperture was f/9. Focal length was 35.0mm. ISO was 250. I did not have my tripod but was able to brace against a tree.

Inspiration

I love taking photos of cloudy or stormy skies. This one was very dark and moody to watch. I feel so blessed to be able to capture some of natures beauty and color.

Editing

I did some post processing in my Nikon, just to brighten some of the lighter areas. This was shot as jpeg but I have since move on to raw format with Photoshop and Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I always have my Nikon D5600, Nikon 18-140mm lens, Nikon 55-600mm lens and sometimes Sigma20mm lens wide angle (love this lens but it is very heavy if you are hiking). Along with this I make sure I have a lens cleaning cloth, a light windbreaker that is weatherproof, grey card, extra batteries and I try to carry a tripod or monopod. Of course for this photo I didn't have a tripod or monopod with me.

Feedback

I always watch the weather forecasts. Sometimes it doesn't work out, but I always seem to find something. I also have Ephemiris or Star Tracker on my phone to see sunrise, sunset, golden hour and blue hour. All very helpful. Make sure your phone is charged and you are ready for any weather. Maybe a protein bar or something to eat that is convenient to carry. Try to be as best prepared for the elements as you can be without being overwhelmed with clothing and equipment. Planning is key to having a successful trip even if it is only for a couple of hours or a few days.
