Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a stage at the University of Bedfordshire. I was studying my degree in photography at the time and was experimenting with low key lighting with a vision in mind to create dream sequences for my final work.

Time

As the photo was taken indoors there is not much to note of the time of day.

Lighting

I wanted to create scenes in which you were unsure of where they took place. The figures emerging from a dark scene, almost as if they could be within a dream. I used a single Profoto light in order to simply light the subject.

Equipment

This was shot on my favourite lens, the 70-200mm f2.8 on a Canon 1DX mark ii. I used a Profoto A1 off-camera to light the subject with. The value of this mobile flash can also not be understated!

Inspiration

As stated I was trying to build a sequence of photos that could resemble a dream, being unsure exactly where or how the photos were taken. The scene we created here almost happened by chance. We were creating several other images together and as I was looking for a new angle by going upstairs in the theatre I happened to come across a bathtub that had been used as a prop before. I thought there was something interesting about it and decided to experiment with it. It resulted in this image which turned out better than any of the others which we had previously taken. It just goes to show how being open to the scene and objects you find can really pay off!

Editing

I did very little post-processing on this. For this series, I was keen on getting the shots "in camera". I ended up applying a little sharpening and colour balancing the image, but very little besides this.

In my camera bag

My go-to equipment is the Canon 1DX mark ii with the "holy trinity' of lenses(well, almost); a 16-35mm f4 24-70mm 2.8 and a 70-200mm 2.8. The 70-200mm is by far my favourite lens which never ceases to amaze me as to the number of situations in which it comes in useful. I do the majority of my portraits with it, and also is my go-to for sports and action photography. Whilst working in Greece as a resort photographer the lense rarely left my camera and really proved just how versatile it could be across many different situations.

Feedback

Experiment! Doing portrait shoots you never know when that magic moment will come, or with what found object might be interesting. I believe photography can often be about harnessing and creating your own luck and having the persistence to continue shooting when you seem to be failing.
