This photo was taken at the beach near my home on the southwest shores of Lake Michigan.Time
This picture was taken during the Polar Vortex that hit the Midwestern and Northern states in January of 2019, on a bitterly cold but gorgeous afternoon.Lighting
I loved the way the natural sunlight created shadows on the icebergs. The sea smoke rising from the water behind the ice created an effect of mystery, almost as if one would enter a magical winter wonderland beyond the cave or over the bridge.Equipment
Shot with my iphone 7Inspiration
Lake Michigan inspires me every day. I try to get to the beach every morning, because the scenery always changes. It is never the same view twice! On this day, I was inspired by the enormous ice shelves and bergs that had formed as a result of the deep freeze. I am a teacher, and school had been closed for days. Getting out to my favorite place was bound to happen!Editing
I did a few minor adjustments to the contrast, structure, and saturation, though not much, as I wanted to retain the integrity and natural beauty of the lake.In my camera bag
Normally I shoot with my iphone. I finally upgraded to the 11. That way I am always prepared when something catches my eye. When I set my intentions on photography I have an old Canon EOS that I bought used and a couple of refurbished lenses. I am a total amateur!Feedback
Watch out for sinkholes in the snow and dress for the weather! Avoid walking onto the ice, and stay where you now there is land underneath. During this shoot, I sunk waist deep into an unexpected sinkhole under the ice. Luckily I had boots and snow pants on, and there was solid ground -not water-beneath me!
