Location
I took this at home in a small room I use for “home project” photography.Time
It was a mid afternoon photography session.Lighting
The lighting was provided by a simple small LED desk lamp in an otherwise unlit room. I guess I must have used an off camera flash to freeze the smoke action.Equipment
At the time I took this, my camera was a Canon 80D which was mounted on a tripod. The lens I am unsure of, but maybe was a 50 mm.Inspiration
This was inspired by a Japanese theme in my local camera club competition. The ceramic pot is one I threw myself a year before and which I made look like it originated in the east. I wanted to attempt some smoke photography also with this image.Editing
At that time I didn’t know too much about post processing, unlike now! I probably did some basic adjustments to the shadows etc. but nothing too major. In my camera bag
Nowadays I am using a Canon mirrorless full frame EOSR body. My lens kit includes an RF 24-105 f4, EFS 17-55 f2.8, EFS 10-18 f4.5-5.6, macro EF 100 f2.8 and a newly purchased RF 70-200 f2.8 - the arrival of which is hugely anticipated. I use a Vanguard Alta Pro tripod and have UV filters for each lens, a 2 and 10 stop ND Filter plus circular polarisers.Feedback
Make sure to ventilate the room well whilst burning incense or other forms of smoke - this not only helps you breathe but stops an overly smoky air density ruining your images. Be patient and take plenty of shots - there might just be a gem amongst them!
