Behind The Lens

Location

Here is an interpretation of the Troll's Road located in Norway. The road is closed during the winter and are only open between late May or June and a date in the fall. It all depends when winter sets in. The road is part of one of the most spectacular districts for landscape photography in the country. I am a self taught photographer and are therefore searching the country for locations where I can test the camera to its limits with the results I was hoping for.

Time

After studying the weather forecast and driving 500 km I got to the location late in the afternoon. During daylight the location was visited by several tourists. Luckily I was all alone when daylight ended and I could position the tripod with the camera mounted where I wanted. Then I had to wait for some passing cars which could be the source for the light trail through the valley. With a little bit of luck the live composite mode in the camera was ended at 00:08.

Lighting

I wanted the picture to have a mysterious atmosphere with a focal point leading the viewer through the scene. Therefore I thought that a light trail would be perfect for captivating people's imagination viewing the picture alone or in combination with a written message.

Equipment

The picture was shot with an Olympus OM-D EM-1 with a 7-14 2.8 Pro lense mounted on a Manfrotto tripod. The Olympus cameras have a feature called Live Composite Mode. It is excellent for light painting or any long exposure with many light sources. This means that you do not have to merge 400 pictures in post. It is all done in camera. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I had for some time wanted a photo not already part of some written material I could use when presenting folklore literature in a class. So I asked myself what is better then the Troll's Road in the night captivating your imagination? The road is also part of a district inspiring for any landscape photographer.

Editing

All though I did not have to merge 400 pictures in post because of the live composite mode in camera there was a fair amount of processing in Capture One for the RAW file and Affinity Photo for the exported jpeg in order to get the atmosphere I wanted.

In my camera bag

I always carry my E-M1 and 7-14 2.8 Pro. This is usually followed up by the 12mm 2.0, the 12-40 2.8 Pro, a compact tripod and the E-M5. This kit is small and light ensuring good quality and fits a small bag in to my backpack perfectly if I have to hike in order to get to the location. It handles every aspect of the climate in Scandinavia.

Feedback

I think having a vision is the most important thing to have when doing landscapes. What do you want with the picture? What are you communicating? How can you interact with the environment on the location even if the weather forecast is not all you hoped it to be. Of course you have to know your equipment, strength and weaknesses. I think having a wide enough lense is more important than having this or that camera.
