Location
This image was shot at Onyx Beach on Lake Superior, Near Silver Bay Minnesota.Time
With this location in mind I set out at 4am to make the 3.5 hr drive north to Duluth to catch the sunrise I proceeded to work my way up the shoreline all day until reaching this location about 40 minutes before sunset.Lighting
It was a rather bright, and cloudless day. The sun was setting just out of frame to the right. The Steam from a nearby industrial facility provided the cloudy look.Equipment
Shot on My Nikon D320, with my Sigma 17-50 f2.8 lens. I also used a 10 stop nd filter to get the smoothing effect of the water.Inspiration
I had visited this area to watch the northern lights a few years back before I really got serious about photography. I couldn't get this Image out of head. So finally, II packed up my gear made the 5 hr drive to shoot it in the winter covered in snow at -9 degrees fahrenheit.Editing
All post editing was done in lightroom. In my camera bag
My bag always has everything I need to shoot with. Long range lenses, macro, and prime. Extra batteries are a must along with a spare charger that connects to a 12v applicationFeedback
Keep those batteries warm, keep them charged. Shooting a long exposure shot in this type of cold will drain your battery quickly. I used hand warmers and a rubber band around my batteries when not in use to keep them warm.
