Location
This photo was taken along US75 near Caryville, TN.Time
The image was taken about 5pm in April, 2017.Lighting
Natural daylight lighting with no flash was all that I used to capture this old ferris wheel.Equipment
This was shot handheld with a Canon DSLR Rebel T3i and EF-S55-250mm at 116mm. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
We had noticed this abandoned little amusement park several times while driving along US75 but never took the time to stop although it always intrigued me. I always assumed it would be locked up in some way. This time we finally stopped and I was amazed to find that we could drive right into the parking lot. There is an old Titan rocket, this ferris wheel. Two other structures look like mini castle towers with turrets. The cracked asphalt with weeds growing through and the rusted equipment evoked so many emotions -- why was it there? why was it abandoned? who used to ride this ferris wheel? It just made me think about all the stories it could tell.Editing
The only post-processing was to increase the contrast a little. In my camera bag
My equipment bag has evolved in the last few years but I still rely on my trusty Rebel T3i with which I use a Tamron 18-400mm. I also have a Rebel T6i mounted with Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 for macro work. My tripod is a 3-legged Thing Travis. Aside from these essentials, I work with an assortment of ND and UV filters, a small Wescott reflector, and a wired remote. Outside of the actual camera gear, my favorite and most used purchase has been a Gnarbox that allows me to backup each shooting day until I can get home to my normal post-shoot workflow.Feedback
Don't pass up opportunities. I had noticed this numerous times and always thought that the next time it might be gone but yet it intrigued me and told me stories. If you see something that attracts your attention, take the time to stop (even turn around if necessary) and determine what it was that caught your mind's eye. If it did yours, it will do others, and if it writes a story in the viewer it's worth the time.
