I took this photo of my daughter running over the big granite rock of Paarl Mountain in South Africa. She is a middle distance athlete and was chosen to model clothing for a sports brand.Time
We decided to do the shoot in the late afternoon during the golden hour before sunset. We had to leave home about an hour earlier to reach the site at the planned time. This photo was taken at 18h04 just before the sun vanished behind the horizon.Lighting
Although the eastern side of the mountain was already in the shade, the rock was still in the golden light of the setting sun.Equipment
This photo was taken with a Canon 5D Mark IV with a EF24-105mm f/4L lens. Because of the terrain and the long climb no tripod was used.Inspiration
I wanted to take an action photo showing the athlete in a different environment than the usual athletics track we got used to. The smoothness of her movement and her body contrasted well with the rough grey granite on which she was running.Editing
I played a little with the white balance to bring out the nice warm colors of the afternoon sun.In my camera bag
I use two bodies. Firstly for portraits and landscapes, the Canon 5D Mark IV with mostly two lenses accompanying it. A Canon EF 24-105 f/4L ISII USM and the wide angle Canon 11-24mm f/4 L. The second body is a Canon 7D Mark II fitted with my big Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens which comes in handy when shooting wildlife and birds in flight.Feedback
Take time to visit places over and over again and plan your picture carefully beforehand. Doing mountain biking as a sport I know this part of the mountain very well and could actually visualize the photo before taking it.
