Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Blackpool and Fleetwood Yacht Club. Me and my wife have a holiday caravan nearby and this is one of our favourite places there.

Time

We had been for a good walk with our dogs along the estuary and stopped here for refreshments, a beer or two ha. I always take my camera with me just in case. I took this photo around 11 o'clock in the morning.

Lighting

The day started out as a very nice spring morning so there was plenty of good light but as early afternoon came the clouds started to roll in which wasn't a bad thing for some good moody shots like the one here. Also with the clouds partially blocking the sun it helped to reduce the glare coming of the water

Equipment

This shot was taken on my first camera I got, a Nikon D70s with an 18-55 lens, which was given to me by my dad who got me into photograhy in the first place so I have him to thank for this image. Lens and camera where set to 18mm, f8.0 and ISO 320

Inspiration

Me and my wife where sat having a nice drink after a good walk with our dogs. We like to stop here to enjoy the view and watch the boats, unfortunately as the tide was low there wasn't much out on the water. So we where just sat enjoying the company, the beer and the views when these menacing looking clouds rolled over this great view which inspired me to get this shot.

Editing

Yes. I converted the image into black and white and adjusted the RGB colours to get the contrast desired. I also gave the clouds a bit more contrast and detail in raw to give them a bit more of an aggresive look.

In my camera bag

I enjoy all aspects of photography from macro to landscapes, animals to cars. So depending on what I'm doing will determine what I carry with me. Because of the in built auto focus motor I still use the Nikon D70s with a Sigma 105mm f 2.8 macro lens and a Nikon D5500 with a sigma 50-500mm lens for when I'm out walking my dogs as you never know what your going to come across. When I'm out at a car meet, a racetrack or on a shoot with a car or motorbike I carry my big bag with the D70s and D5500, I will have my Sigma 10-20mm, Sigma 50-500mm and my Nikon 35mm f 1.8 for some nice background blur shots. I also have a flashgun, a CPL filter to reduce the reflections on cars, my tripod for doing my glass bonnet shots and a must for doing some lightpainting is a decent torch.

Feedback

My photography is still just a hobby for me at the moment but I'm constantly practicing and trying new things to improve my photography to become more than just a hobby. So for that practice is what I would say but also the best advice I could give is always have your camera on you with the best lens you have for where you are going, for example when I'm walking my dogs I prefer to have my 50-500mm lens as this gives me a broad focal range to get close ups of my dogs playing or a Seagul swooping down for a piece of bread. I captured this image by chance and because I always have my camera with me as you never know what you will come across.
