The Little Penguin, sometimes called the Faerie Penguin is the smallest penguin species in the world. There are 12 resident penguins at the conservation center, all of which were rescued, but deemed unsuitable to be released back into the wild, as they would not survive. Among the 12 are a pair of penguins which year after year, prepared a nest in anticipation of their egg. Unfortunately, both penguins are male. Their chance to become a parent presented itself when another couple (also in the 12) abandoned their egg, which according to the keepers was not unusual for first time parents. The foster parents took such good care of their adopted penguin that it grew to maturity two weeks faster than it would typically have in the wild!
