Location
This image was taken during a senior photo session on a farm in Central Missouri.Time
Our sessions are normally scheduled during the golden hour, however on this day it was almost completely overcast so it wouldn't have mattered. As an artist I LOVE the wind in photos, but my clients sometimes do not. This young lady went with it and we created magic that day.Lighting
This was taken on a cloudy, overcast day. The lighting is rather boring, but I think that the subject's expression, connection to the camera, and the movement in her hair makes it an exceptionally captivating portrait.Equipment
Nikon D610, Sigma Art 35mm, natural lightInspiration
I love portraiture, and this was taken during a senior photo session. I am always in awe of the seniors that give me artistic freedom and trust me to create a unique look for their photos. I also believe in simplicity. There was no fancy set up for this image. It was taken on a farm with natural, overcast light. The wind picking up when it did was a stroke of good luck and I always try to capture movement whenever I can, as I think it can make a portrait more dynamic for the viewer.Editing
Most of my images are processed in Lightroom. In this case I simply converted to black and white, which I find to focus on the subject rather than their clothing or surroundings. In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D610 with my Sigma Art 35mm lens attached. The Sigma is my favorite and most versatile lens. It works well for storytelling as well as portraits. I also carry a Lensbaby Composer Pro Edge 80 as well as a Lensbaby Velvet 56 for whenever I feel the need to be a little more creative. These lenses always allow for that.Feedback
While I love documentary photography (as you will see in most of my personal work) I do love a good portrait. There's something magical about isolating a subject in such a way that they are the main focus of the image. Converting to black and white always emphasizes this for me as well. I do feel that a portrait can tell a story yet hold some mystery for the viewer at the same time.
