Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my studio.

Time

I believe it was in the morning around 10am or so.

Lighting

The lighting is two 5' strip boxes on either side of the model with fabric grids to focus the light.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D300 and a AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens. The lights are Paul C. Buff Alien B's with 5' strip boxes and fabric grids. The glass in front of the model is actually the top of a glass coffee table from Ikea. I sprayed the model and the glass with warm water and shot through the glass.

Inspiration

The model, Audrey Rose, had not modeled much at all before this. This had been her first nude shoot and we did some lovely artistic nude work that was less risque. By this point (probably an hour or so in) she had gotten very comfortable working with me and decided to let go and get a bit more crazy. Honestly, her emotion in front of the lens was incredibly powerful and I didn't even have to look at the image preview to know I was getting some fantastic shots. Editing

There is very little editing on this image. I made some basic adjustments in Lightroom and pulled it into Nik Silver Effects Pro to make it into a black & white image.

In my camera bag

I have my camera, a 105 mm VR macro lens, a 50mm 1.4 lens, two speedlights and other miscellaneous junk. When I am not in my studio I tend to take a lot of stuff with me, usually more than I need. That said, I have saved more than one shoot by having all my stuff with me. The vagabond mini from Paul C. Buff is a very important piece of my road kit. I usually have it with one Alien B and typically a beauty dish or some kind of umbrella modifier. I often have my tripod with me, but don't always use it unless I am doing HDR landscape or macro. I find working with models you need to be fluid and free.

Feedback

People try to light everything and show everything. In art nudes it is about the shadows and what is hidden that makes the image powerful. Taking these kind of photos you need to hide everything and then use the light to show small areas that you feel will tell the story.
