Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of the beautiful Russian Model Aunta. Taken in a studio in Dublin as part of a portfolio

Time

Evening

Lighting

Just a single light used and a small reflector behind

Equipment

Shot using the Canon 6d which I find a great camera and slightly more compact to the other full frame 5d camera. The lens used was the 24-105mm. Camera was handheld

Inspiration

I wanted to experiment with different lighting techniques and went from high key to low key with a range of backdrops and props during the same shoot. It was a long day, but very worthwhile

Editing

Very little in the way of post-processing. I usually bring the raw file into Adobe Photoshop where I would adjust the levels, white balance, contrast and if required carry out some smoothing of the skin. Finally sharpening and cleaning up around the area of the eyes would be the most photoshop I would do on a straight shot.

In my camera bag

Two full frame cameras, Canon 5d mk2 and Canon 6d. Lenses would include the 24-105mm, 50mm F1.4, 100mm F2.8, 100-400mm F4-5.6

Feedback

Trial and error.A light meter, though not essential, is a handy instrument to help achieve the correct exposure without too much trial and error. I would always aim to slightly under-expose a portrait and adjust the levels post-process to ensure you don't blow any highlights and you keep the detail.
