I took this photo in the Mall Walk area next to the Student Union on the UTD college campus.Time
I remember it being a nice day out. It was partly cloudy, because it was supposed to rain later, but it was open enough to give us a perfect natural lighting. It was around 2-4pm so, the afternoon light was just starting to come to it's peak.Lighting
Honestly, I just wanted simple and beautiful. It was a nature themed shoot, so taking it in the late afternoon was perfect for some of the more golden light effects.Equipment
I just used my Nikon D3200 with the 18-55mm lens. On some of the photos within the shoot, i did use a telephoto lens.Inspiration
I had an assignment for my class, where I had to take 4 portraits and they had to be themed. I brainstormed, and thought an outdoor shoot would be perfect. The UTD campus is so beautiful and filled with green trees and lovely flowers everywhere. After knowing my location, I thought about my theme...Greek mythology has always intrigued me and since I had already chosen outside as my location, it seemed like a nice match. I kind of just drew from the looks of Greek Goddesses and made very simple props out of a sheet and some leaves and twigs that we found on the ground. It's such a fun experience to incorpprate something that interests you into shoots.Editing
For this photo, I kept the post-processing simple and just brought the green tones up just enough to match the golden light source from the sun. I think by doing so, it really brought out the nature feel of the shoot. In my camera bag
I usually always shoot with my Nikon D3200. The 18-55mm lens may not be able to shoot as far, but it's great for simple portraits, which I love doing. I have 3 different filter lenses - an ultraviolet filter, a florescent light filter, and one for taking photos with windows or screens in the shot. I also have my telephoto lens and my wide angle lens, which I use mostly for landscapes. I also have my lens cleaner on hand, because I enjoy taking photos just after it has rained and it is usually humid afterwards, which fogs up my lens a lot. I typically carry around my 55inch tripod, as well as my mini tripod when I am doing shoot. The mini tripod works well when I am trying to capture smaller, close ups of things such as plants and flowers, or when I am doing my abstract photography. I'm mostly self-taught, so it is fun to always experiment with the equipment that I have, while incorporating what I just learned in a digital camera class that I took last year.Feedback
If one is trying to capture nature in all it's glory, as well as perfect a portrait, they should definitely wait for a late afternoon. Try for a day when it's slightly cloudly, but not covering every inch of the sky. It also helps if there is a feeling of rain, or if it rained the day before. Everything is always just much more green than usual. Also, keep the props simple, as not to distract from the simplicity of the photo. It's really amazing how much help you can get from what Mother Nature has already offered to you.
