Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo during a family safari trip to Botswana. We were staying at a lodge on the Okavango Delta and went on a canoe trip. It was incredible! We saw elephants near the shore, water buffalo, and stunning birds.

Time

This was the very first activity we did at this lodge, and we had just flown from the previous one. They gave us time to put our stuff in our room and rushed to take us boating to catch the sunset. I snapped this shot around 7 pm in August of this year.

Lighting

My canoe was in the back, and I loved the shiloette the sun made against our guides. I waited for the scenery to line up with the sun before I took the shot. I then made it black and white to add some drama.

Equipment

I used a Fujifilm Finepix S and Adobe Photoshop to edit.

Inspiration

The beautiful scenery of Botswana cannot be parralled. Everywhere I went, I couldn't help myself from taking pictures and being inspired by everything around me. Botswana has done an incredible job conserving their environment and I wanted to capture it all. It is truly one mother nature's greatest achievements.

Editing

Yes! As much as I loved this original photo, I knew it needed a little touching up. I used Adobe photoshop to brighten it up, increase exposure, and make it black and white.

In my camera bag

Because I travel so much, just my camera! It is a Fujifilm Finepix S. I love it because it takes clear pictures, has a great zoom, and I do not have to hassle with multiple lenses on the go. I own lots of equipment (such as another camera, portrait backdrops, umbrella lights, lots more...) but did not have it with me because it would not work for this style of trip.

Feedback

Go on a safari! See the amazing landscapes of Africa! The biodiversity and wildlife give you plenty of opportunities to capture incredible experiences. Also, don't just take pictures of the lions and giraffes you see. Take pictures of your guides, your transportation (probably a 10 seater plane), and everything about your experience.
