Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in downtown Vancouver, BC Canada, close to the waterfront. There is a mix of classic late 1800 - early 1900 architecture and modern office highrises that are predominantly glass clad.

Time

I took this photo in mid afternoon in July of 2008.

Lighting

The sun was directly south of this classic early 1900 building. The lighting was perfect for reflecting this beatiful facade from the massive mirror facing it.

Equipment

Canon Rebel EOS T4i with Canon 58mm EFS lens (18-55mm zoom) and polarizer filter

Inspiration

The reflection of this classic art deco building in the modern mirror glass tower with its rigid grid facade contrasts architectural styles, differential of size and old vs new. Yet, the beauty in it all is how perfectly the two blend with each other. Of course happenstance of time, place and weather conditions is what makes for some of our best photos.

Camera, 18-55 mm zoom lens, a 100-300mm zoom, polarizer filter, mini tripod and a wireless remote release. Also an iPhone X.

Feedback

Always be aware of your surroundings. I look for contrasts in texture, nature, perspecive, unusual angles and intensity in colour. Know your equipment and how to quickly change settings so you won't miss taking a photo becasue you could note get your settings right. Also, be aware of where the sun (or lighting) is. I want shoot away from the sun.
