Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home studio at Cobar (outback NSW)

Time

I took this photo around midday.

Lighting

Bianca is backlit by a window with a lace curtain. I used an off camera speedlite fired into a 80cm octobox to light her face.

Equipment

I used a Canon 7D with a Tamron 24-70 & a yongnuo IV speedlite.

Inspiration

I was actually trying to get my lighting right for a shoot with a different model later in the day & used Bianca (my daughter) as a stand in model (on top of a coffee table to get her at the right height lol). Bianca is always tricky to photograph because she pulls funny faces so I have to wait for that fraction of a second when she relaxes & stops thinking about 'posing'. I was thrilled to get such a natural image.

Editing

I removed a few scratches from her skin, highlighted her eyes & smoothed her skin in Photo Shop using hand editing & some Paint The Moon actions. I then went to Lightroom to convert to black & white & added contrast to make her skin brighter.

In my camera bag

Canon 7D (although I'm hanging out for a 5d!!!), sigma 30 art 1.4, Sigma 70-200 2.8, tamron 90 macro, canon 50 1.8, 2x yongnuo flashes/stands/octobox/umbrella/trigger set, 1 small reflector + 1 large reflector

Feedback

Be patient. It is very tricky to capture natural facial expressions on children, especially around Bianca's age of 4. They tend to 'pose' & scrunch up their faces so you just need to wait & try to capture the moments in between. I fired the speedlite into by octobox at about 45 degrees to the left of the subject.
