Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at Marievale Bird Sanctuary, it is a protected area in Gauteng, South Africa. It is about 10 km² in size, and situated on the East Rand on the Blesbokspruit. The Blesbokspruit is a major perennial river in Gauteng which is flanked by extensive floodplains on either side

Time

Early morning 0910, from a hide overlooking a section of the flood plain

Lighting

Early morning golden hour

Equipment

Nikon D4S with Nikon 600mm F4 lens. Camera settings F6.3, ISO 1250 EV -.3 Shutter 1/1000

Inspiration

Love watching and capturing bird behavior

Editing

Very little post processing in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

As a wildlife photographer I always have 3 camera bodies with me. Nikon D810,D750 and D4S. Lenses would be Nikon 400mm F2.8, Nikon 600mm F4, Nikon 80-400, Nikon 70- 200mm F2.8, Nikon 24-70mm F2.8 14-24mm F2.8, Speedlight 900 and 1.4 teleconvertor.

Feedback

Biggest problems one has is the capture a sharp image, ensuring the correct depth of field to ensuring both birds are in focus. When using a 600mm lens @f6.3 your depth of field over 20 meters would be 3cm, so this does become quit difficult. Shot a couple of test images, to ensuring when shooting the actual image everthing is correct.
